SONG #1 - Bethlehem Boy

Bethlehem Star, shone from afar

Over the place where He lay

The city was quiet, that special night

When God stepped out of space.

Into our little world,

God’s great love was hurled

In the form of a Babe

Oh what a gift He gave

Bethlehem Star shone from afar

Leading us to the light.

Angels sang, shepherds came

To see this Bethlehem Boy

Into our little world,

God’s great love was hurled

In the form of a Babe

Oh what a gift He gave

Bethlehem Star shone from afar

May its light fill our hearts

Let us all sing, crown Him our King

Jesus, our Bethlehem boy.

Our joy!

Jesus, our Bethlehem boy.

SCENE 1: Jonathan and Rachel in the street in front of the inn. Micah comes running on stage carrying a small basket

Jonathan:  Hi, Micah.

Micah: Hi Jonathan. Hi Rachel. What’s-u doin?

Rachel: Nothing much.

Jonathan: Hey, can you guys go down the street and play?

Micah:  (unhappy) No, I can’t. My mom told me I have to stay right here in case she needs me.

Jonathan:  Oh…. well, at least you have a mom. You should be happy about that.

Micah:  I’m sorry, Jonathan. I know it’s hard for you not having any parents. Oh, my mom sent some food for you. (Hands him the basket)

Jonathan:  Wow! Your mom is so nice. Tell her I said, “Thanks.” And Rachel, I really appreciate that your dad lets me sleep in your barn.

(He sits down and looks around at people coming onstage)

Jonathan: Why are all these people coming into town?

Rachel: Well, the Emperor in Rome has commanded that everyone has to go back to their family’s home to register.

Micah: It’s kind of exciting! We might see some long-lost relatives coming back to Bethlehem.

Jonathan: (sadly) Yeah, like my long-lost parents!

Rachel: Well, Mr. Gloomy, You have friends who care about you and help you.

Jonathan: Yes, but I don’t have a family, so it’s not the same.

Micah: Well, you’re a Bethlehem boy. You belong to everybody!

Rachel: At least you have a place to sleep tonight. There aren’t enough rooms in Bethlehem for all these people!

Micah’s mom: (off stage or from back of group on stage) Micah! Come home!

Micah: Oh, man! See you guys later. (waves and runs off stage)

Rachel:  Ok, later.

Jonathan:  Well, at least he has someone who wants him.

Innkeeper enters from stage left and stands in front of his inn. Mary & Joseph and any extras, including shepherds enter from stage right.

SONG #2: Going Back Home

Ev’rybody’s coming into Bethlehem.

Ev’rybody’s coming back home.

Ev’rybody’s coming into Bethlehem.

Where nobody has to be alone.

Innkeeper/solo:

Hi old friend. Good to see you.

Look how your family has grown.

How’ve you been? How’s life treating you?

My how the time has flown.

Ev’rybody’s coming into Bethlehem.

Ev’rybody’s coming back home.

Ev’rybody’s coming in to Bethlehem.

Where nobody has to be alone.

Going back home. (I’m going back home)

Going back home (Been traveling long)

Back to the place (There’s no other place)

I belong. (This is my home.)

Everybody’s coming into Bethlehem. Everybody’s crowding all around.

Coming from far away

Solo/Jonathan: I hope they don’t decide to stay!

All: Everybody’s coming into town.

Going back home. (I’m going back home)

Going back home (Been traveling long)

Back to the place (There’s no other place)

I belong. (This is my home.)

Going back home. (I’m going back home)

Going back home (Been traveling long)

Back to the place (There’s no other place)

I belong. (This is my home.)

Back to the place

Solo/Jonathan: Just give me some space!

All: I belong.

(Shout): We’re home!!

SCENE 2 (Mary and Joseph stop at the inn and talk to the innkeeper who is standing out front, while the children listen nearby.)

Joseph: Good sir, could we have a room for the night?

Innkeeper: No, I’m sorry. We are full.

Joseph: Please, Sir. My wife is having a baby.

Innkeeper: Oh, dear! Let’s see. What can I do? Rachel, Rachel, come here!

Rachel (runs up): Yes, father.

Innkeepter: Help these people to the cave in the back.

Rachel: Where the animals stay, father!?

Innkeeper: Yes, yes, they must have some place to stay. Be quick about it!

Rachel: Yes, father.

(Rachel leaves with Mary and Joseph.)

Micah: (comes back on stage) Where did Rachel go?

Jonathan: Well there were some people who needed a place to stay, so her father gave them my room!

Micah: Your room?

Jonathan: Yeah, you know, back behind the inn where the animals stay.

Micah: Oh, right. Well, I guess you’ll have company tonight then.

Jonathan: That’s ok. I like company.

Micah: Well, I’m sure glad you are not mad at Rachel’s father.

Jonathan: No, I learned long ago it’s best to forgive. Anyway, I’m glad to share my room with people in need, ‘cause lots of people have shared with me.

SONG #3: Sharing is Love

Solo/Micah:

Sharing, that’s a part of caring.

It’s a part of telling others of God’s love.

Giving is a part of loving.

It’s a way of showing God’s love from above.

All: For when you open up your heart,

You give someone a part of what you have inside.

And by doing good to others, we can show the Father’s heart to ev’ryone around.

Solo:

Daring’s what you are by caring

what someone is feeling when they’re all alone.

Forgiving, that’s a part of living, when you are repairing broken hearts with love.

All: Forgiving means that we remember God has shown us mercy even when we're wrong.

And by doing good to others, we can show the Father’s heart to ev’ryone around.

Solo/Micah: Sharing, that’s a part of caring.

It’s a part of knowing sharing is love.

SCENE 3

Jonathan: I’m so thankful for friends who help me, but I really wish I had a family. I’m tired of being the Bethlehem boy!

Micah: My father says that we have to trust God when we have a need.

Jonathan: What does that mean? How do you do that?

Micah: Well, God loves us and promises to take care of us. So, if you want a family, you should ask God for one.  King David said, “Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart.”*

Jonathan: It’s that easy?

Micah:  I guess so. My Mom says that she asked God for a child and she got me. So, I guess you could do that, too

Jonathan: (palms together, but doesn’t bow head). God, I need a family, and I am going to trust You for one.

Micah: Amen. I think that’s all you do. Trusting God means that you don’t worry about it any more. You just leave it to Him.

Jonathan: OK. I’ll try.

Song #4: I Will Put My Trust in God

Solo/Jonathan:

1. I will put my trust in God.

He’ll always be my guide.

Through the journey of my life

He’s always by my side.

Thru the darkness I will pray until I see the light.

I will trust my loving God

I walk by faith, not by sight.

Solo:

2. I will put my trust in God.

His love, it never ends.

Through the troubles of my life

He’ll always be my Friend.

I’m trusting in God’s goodness.

He knows what’s best for me.

I can lay my fears aside

Because He cares for me.

All:

3. I will put my trust in God

His promises are true.

His Word’s a lamp unto my feet

His mercies, ever new.

I wake up every morning

Lookin’ for the sun to shine

Since my God is in control

I leave my worries behind.

I will put my trust in God.

He’s worthy of our love.

He’s the Everlasting God

And He is always good!

SCENE 4:  (Rachel runs in.)

Rachel:  (excited) Hey, guess what?!

Micah & Jonathan: What?

Rachel: You know that couple that is I took back to the barn? Well the lady, she just had her baby!

Micah:  Really?

Rachel: Yeah, they barely made it in time!

Jonathan: Wow! That was close!

Micah: Well, Jonathan, you won’t be alone tonight for sure with a crying baby!

Jonathan: Yeah, I hope I can get some sleep!

Rachel:  Hey, you want to go see the baby?

Jonathan: No...., they all look alike.

Micah: Oh, come on, let’s go. Not every baby is born in a barn.

Rachel: Yes, and he was born in my barn!

Rachel, Jonathan & Micah walk into the manger and see the innkeeper and 2-3 shepherds there kneeling before the manger. (If your stage is small you can move the “inn” prop out of the way to reveal the manger scene behind with Mary, Joseph & the shepherds already in place.)

Song #5: Little King of Earth

Shepherds & Choir or Shepherd solo:

Little Lamb of Heaven.

Little King of Earth.

Who can tell this early,

what Your life is worth

All the angels singing

about this special day

When God sent His only son

to sleep upon the hay.

They sang, “Gloria, gloria.

Glory to God in the highest.

Gloria, Gloria.

Glory to the King of Earth.

Solo/Mary: Little Lamb of Heaven,

Little King of Earth.

Prophets told so long ago

about Your special birth

Messiah come to set us free

from the stain of sin

You came to give us real life

when You live within.

Solo/Mary: Silent night, holy night.

All is calm. All is bright.

Silent night, holy night.

Peace to the King of Earth.

All: Joy! Joy! Joy to the world.

Joy! Joy! Joy to the world.

(2-part: Mary and Choir)

Choir: Gloria, Gloria.

Glory to the King of Earth.

Mary: Silent night, holy night.

Peace to the King of Earth.

Sleep little King of Earth

SCENE 5:  the Manger

Shepherd 1: Children, come in and see the baby Messiah.

Rachel: The Messiah!?

Micah: How could that be?

Jonathan: How do you know?

Shepherd 2: Well, an angel from God came to us out in the field and told us about this baby, God’s Son, being born here tonight.

Rachel: God’s Son?

Joseph: Yes, His name is Jesus.

Mary: He came to save His people from their sins as the prophets told long ago.

Joseph: And to show us that God loves us.

Jonathan: Well, I don’t feel much like God loves me. I don’t even have any parents.

Shepherd 2: Well, young man I could say the same thing.

Micah: You don’t have any parents either?

Shepherd 2: No, I have parents, but I don’t have a child, and I have been asking God for one for a long time.

Jonathan: Oh, I’m sorry. I guess other people have problems, too.

Shepherd 3: Yes, but God is still good.

Shepherd 1: And just because you have trouble in your life doesn’t mean He doesn’t care.

Mary: Sometimes God uses other people to show His love to you.

Rachel: Like when Micah and I help you.

Shepherd 2: That’s right! And if you would agree to be my son, then God has answered both our prayers.

Jonathan: Wow! I would like that! ….Father.

(Jonathan walks over beside the Shepherd 2 who puts his arm around Jonathan’s shoulder.)

Mary: God’s cares about our needs, but He sent Jesus, the Messiah, to meet our greatest need, to forgive us of our sins and help us find our way to God.

Joseph: God didn’t send Jesus just to us, but to everyone.

Micah: Well, then Jesus is the real Bethlehem Boy!

All: (ad lib) That’s right! Yeah! Jesus is for everyone. The Bethlehem Boy. The Messiah!  (each person says something different at the same time.)
